This book is a tribute to Susan Leney, who died aged 22 of a rare degenerative disease. She and her parents Les and Norah moved to Biddenden, Kent, in 1960 when Susan was nine years old. For years the Leneys believed their daughter was suffering from a complication caused by the mumps virus, until the truth, only half understood even at the time, emerged. Writer and journalist Stephanie Boucher, who also lives in Biddenden, has unravelled the complexities of the disease and presents some answers – they can’t bring back Susan, but they can help Les, her father, to better understand why his daughter died.

Winceby House School was founded in 1915 by two sisters, Miss Angela Wilson and Miss Winifred Wilson, known to all as ‘Madam’. From small beginnings, the school grew through the middle years of the twentieth century, to become a thriving girls’ boarding school in Bexhill. Graham Britnell Green draws on school magazines and recollections of old girls to illustrate the story. Winceby, however, was not to survive advancements in education and in 1966 it closed. This very special school represents the kind of school that has gone for ever, though it remains a unique piece of social and education history.

In 1977 the hospice movement was in its infancy. Little was understood about offering care to those suffering from terminal illnesses. When Ann Robertson decided to launch the first Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury and gathered around her a tireless band of fellow pilgrims, she had no idea that her dream would lead to two further hospices in Thanet and Ashford. In 2007 the Pilgrims Hospices celebrated its 25th anniversary and this book tells the remarkable story of this achievement.
